Becoming insensitive to sin is a real and ever-present danger to faithfulness. God’s people in Jeremiah’s day, for example, had become so desensitized spiritually, they were not ashamed when they had committed abominations before Jehovah. "They were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush" (Jeremiah 6:15; 8:12). Because of their spiritual stupor, when Jehovah commanded them to "Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls", they said, "We will not walk in them" (Jeremiah 6:16).

Societal mores seem to be ever racing toward calling evil "good" and good "evil". Not so with Jehovah. His definition of what is right and wrong is as unchanging as He is (Malachi 3:6). Contrary to popular theology, Jehovah has not evolved into a God of "love" who winks at, or even approves of, sin. God is still "angry with the wicked every day" (Psalm 7:11).

What Jehovah declared to be an abomination to Him three thousand years ago—when the book of Proverbs was compiled—remains loathsome, repulsive, detestable, and abhorrent to Him today. Because no one who is defiled, or works abomination, or maketh a lie shall enter heaven (Revelation 21:27), it is wise to remind ourselves of those things which the loving God abominates.

Dishonesty and crookedness. "Lying lips are abomination to the Lord...For the froward is abomination to the Lord...They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the Lord: but such as are upright in their way are his delight" (Proverbs 12:22; 3:32; 11:20). Satan is the father of lies and crookedness. He is the instigator of grievous spiritual havoc because of his murderous nature (John 8:44). God’s intense abhorrence of liars and unrighteousness has not lessened with the passage of time. The unending punishment in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone remains the eternal future of all liars and perverse people (Revelation 21:8).

Wickedness. Nothing about the ways of wicked people is tolerable to God. He abominates their thoughts, their lifestyle, and their worship. "The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord...The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the Lord...The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord...The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind?" (Proverbs 15:26, 9, 8; 21:27). Anyone who indulges in ungodliness and worldly lusts, defying God’s grace by not living soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age is anathema to Him.

Pride. "Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished" (Proverbs 16:5). Having too high of an opinion about yourself and too low of an opinion of God is the worst form of idolatry. You have misplaced yourself on the throne which rightfully belongs to Jehovah. Such presumption and arrogance is never safe, not even when practice by many. The proud are God’s abhorred enemy (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5).

Perverted justice. "He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord" (Proverbs 17:15). Jehovah is the righteous judge, because "there is no respect of persons with God" (Romans 2:11). Right is always right. Wrong is always wrong. His standard is not "adjusted" based upon a person’s political party, family connections, wealth, nationality, or sex. He expects His children to judge using righteous judgment (John 7:24), not double standards. "Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord...Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good" (Proverbs 20:10, 23).

Proverbs 6:16-19 encapsulates those things which the loving God abominates with these words: "These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren."

Jehovah always has, still does, and always will.
